Oakland is located opposite San Francisco, and the coastal hills. Great weather and openness make the city a magnet for rich cultural diversity. Oakland is officially the most diverse city in the nation with over 81 languages spoken. From world-class sports teams to the highest number of artists per capita outside of New York City, Oakland truly offers it all.

The crown jewel of the city, Lake Merritt, is also a cultural magnet for the young and old alike. Your Saturday mornings could start with a relaxing walk around the lake and finish up drooling over fresh produce at the top-rated Farmer's Market in the East Bay. Take a handmade gondola out onto the lake or bring the little ones to Children's Fairyland, Walt Disney's inspiration for Disneyland.

Miles of East Bay Regional parkland run the length of the eastern ridge of hills and make up several parks, perfect for hiking, horse back riding, and biking. The Chabot Science Center makes its home high in these hills and offers family programs and night-sky viewing. Oakland has an International Airport and one of the largest seaports in North America. Situated along miles of bay front, the City of Oakland extends up to the ridge of the East Bay hills and within its borders offers a multitude of special neighborhoods that lend this major city a decidedly small town feel, despite its size.

Among Oakland's many desirable neighborhoods are Rockridge, Montclair, Glenview, Crocker Highlands, Hadden Hill, Lakeshore Highlands, Piedmont Avenue, Redwood Heights, Maxwell Park, Laurel District, and Oakmore. All have many wonderful qualities to recommend them, including shopping districts complete with local banks, restaurants and hardware stores. Some of these neighborhoods boast breathtaking views of the bay, while others offer serene wooded groves and canyon haunts. Still, others hearken back to family-friendly enclaves of decades past where neighbors all know each other. From its historic Victorians near Lake Merrit to its contemporary homes perched on the hillsides, and every style of architecture in between, Oakland is known for having some of the most beautiful, stately homes in the East Bay and offers something for everybody.
